You paid for a 4K TV. You're subscribed to a 4K streaming tier. Your internet connection clears 100 Mbps without breaking a sweat. So why does the picture sometimes look like it was run through a blender before it hit your screen?
The answer isn't your TV. It probably isn't your internet, either. It's something most streaming guides never talk about: the codec — the invisible compression engine sitting between the studio master and your eyeballs. What Exactly Is a Codec, and Why Should You Care?
Think of a codec as a translator. Raw 4K video is enormous — we're talking hundreds of gigabytes per hour of footage.
